Shadāshtak

The Shadāshtak Yog is one looked upon with great agitation and distress. This happens due to misinformation among the public: either they aren’t aware of its exact meaning or do not know its implications. Let’s break it down for a better understanding.

Shadāshtak is comprised of two numbers, 6 (ṣaḍ) and 8 (aṣṭ), each with its own association in astrology. This yog is often seen while matching kundalis for marriage.

When looking at kundalis, we can see numbers 1-12 distributed throughout the boxes, and only one of them has Moon (M) written near it. That’s the mark of a person’s Chandra-rashi or Moon-Sign (this is the one we read about in daily horoscopes). The birth chart has 12 bhavas (or houses) out of which the 6th house is called Ari Bhava and the 8th is the Mrutyu Bhava. They are considered inauspicious.

Using this reference, if we find that one’s Moon-Sign is placed 6th or 8th from that of the other, it is unfavourable. We can predicate that they may have gross differences, and a sense of enmity may prevail among them. In other words, one may pose as an obstacle in their partner’s life, and their “happily ever after” would be at risk.

For instance, Person A’s Moon-Sign is Aries (Mesh) and that of Person B is Virgo (Kanya). Virgo is the 6th sign from Aries, and Aries is 8th from Virgo. The planet lords, Mars (Mangal) and Mercury (Budh) share a hostile relationship. In another example, if Person 1’s Moon-Sign is Aquarius (Kumbh) and Person 2’s is Cancer (Kark), it falls in the 6th position from Aquarius, and Aquarius in turn, falls in the 8th from Cancer, which makes the pair ill-suited for each other.

This is how the Shadāshtak Yog works. Note that it may not always be a life-threatening situation. That is determined by the positions of other planets in the birth chart, which need to be examined carefully. One thing is for sure, if this combination occurs in a pair, their marriage bound to be an uphill climb. Follwoing is the list of signs that fall within this Shadāshtak Yog: Aries-Virgo (Mesh-Kanya), Gemini-Scorpio (Mithun-Vrushchik), Leo-Capricorn (Sinh-Makar), Libra-Pisces (Tula-Meen), Sagittarius-Taurus (Dhanu-Vrushabh), Aquarius-Cancer (Kumbh-Kark)

These 6-8 pairs may not always be maleficent; some pairs are considered beneficial. These pairs are termed “Prīti Shadāshtak” and occur when the Lord of one’s Moon-Sign is friends with that of the other person’s Moon-Sign, or the Lord of both persons’ Moon-Signs are the same. Their amity eliminates any chances of danger, especially if latter is the case (same Lord). That is the reason we look to avoid the occurence of this Yog when looking at marriage. Each sign will have one Shadāshtak partner. Following is the list of pairs comprising the auspicious Shadāshtak Yog:

Aquarius-Libra (Kumbh-Tula), Cancer-Sagittarius (Kark-Dhanu), Virgo-Aquarius (Kanya-Kumbh), Scorpio-Aries (Vrushchik-Mesh), Capricorn-Gemini (Makar-Mithun), Pisces-Leo (Meen-Sinh)

The Goona-Milan process and the scrutiny of both Kundalis individually is equally necessary;
It’s a science after all, not just some gibberish.
