Tulsi Vivah

Tulsi Vivah

Once upon a time, Shiva flung his radiance into the sea. Out of this was born a very glorious child who went on to be known as Jalandhar, a very prominent Daitya king. His capital was also called Jalandhar Nagri. His troublesome activities had caused Devas, Sages and humans a lot of harm.

He was married to Princess Vrunda, the daughter of Kalnemi, another Daitya ruler. Her dedication to her husband kept him immortal and unconquered. If one wished to defeat Jalandhar, they had to bring obstructions to her devotion and break the spell.

Lord Vishnu took the form of Jalandhar and touched Vrunda. This meant that her chastity was compromised, and Jalandhar faced loss in battle.

Upon learning the true nature of the event, Vrunda grew furious and cursed Vishnu to be a heartless rock. Obeying his devotee’s curse, Lord Vishnu turned into a Shaligram stone. This curse meant that the protector of the universe would be absent; this caused an imbalance. All the Devas requested Vrunda to release the curse for the betterment of the world. Odeying respect to Gods, she agreed but immolated herself after setting Lord Vishnu free. A tulsi plant grew where she turned to ashes.

Vishnu said: O Vrunda, your devotion and chastity has endeared you more than Lakshmi to me. You will always be with me in the form of Tulsi. Since then, on each Dwadashi of the Kartik month, Vishnu is wedded in Shaligram form to Vrunda as a Tulsi plant. This year the Tulsi Vivah will be celebrated from 15th November Dwadashi till 19th November Poornima.

Difference between Dhanteras and Lakshmi Pujan

Difference between Dhanteras and Lakshmi Pujan

The thirteenth day of the Krushna Paksha in the lunar month of Ashwin is called Dhanteras in Northern India. Maharashtrians call this dayDhanatrayodashi. This year the Dhanterastithi starts on 2nd Nov Tuesday at 11:31 am and ends on 3rd Nov Wednesday 09:02 am. This falls 2 days before Lakshmi Pujan.

Lakshmi Pujan is celebrated on the Tithi of Amavasya of Ashwin month in the period when the Moon is in Swati Nakshatra. This year the Lakshmi Pujanauspicious period is (Amavasya + Swati Nakshatra) from 4 Nov 07:42 am till 5 Nov 2:44 am. Usually, this Puja is performed on a sthir Lagna rashi which would allow the wealth (Lakshmi) to stay constant or grow not to flow away. One should always perform the puja on a Muhurta suitable to the Janma Kundali of the person performing Lakshmi Puja.

For personalized Lakshmi Pujan Muhurta: call +91 74998 46591

There is a difference between Dhanteras and Lakshmi Pujan. On Dhanteras we celebrate the emergence of the physician of the Devas and the God of Ayurvedic medicine – Dhanvantariholding a jug full of Amruta (Nectar) and sacred book of Ayurveda. We worship Lord Dhanvantari who is also one of the forms of Lord Vishnu (the protector) for the good health of all the family members. Thus good health will also help bring fortune in our life.  On the same day, people also worship the treasurer of the Gods that is Lord Lakshmi-Kuber for the material wealth and prosperity.

Goddess Lakshmi is worshiped to gain wealth, richness, and fertility. During Diwali on the night of the Amavasya in Ashwin month, Lakshmi enters the house which is the cleanest, well-lit, and beautifully decorated. Thus, as a tradition, we clean and decorate our homes with lights and rangolis during the Diwali festival.

Wish you a very happy Diwali.

Origins of the divine number 108

Origins of the divine number 108

Hindu scriptures and mythology is full of references to the number 108. The Hindu rosary (Jaap Mala) has 108 beads, any Jaap or mantra is recited 108 times, ever wonder Why?

In Satyanarayan pooja there is ritual where we offer 108 Tulsi leaves to lord Krishna. There are 108 shlokas in the Vishnu sahasra-naam, Lord Ganesha has 108 names, and the Shri Yantra also has 108 intersection points. There are 108 Pithas of goddess Shakti. Most Buddhist temples usually have 108 steps and 108 columns.
Why is this so?

Our ancient science, Ayurveda mentions 108 pressure points in the human body, where consciousness and flesh intersect to give life to the living being. Astronomy gives us reference that the distance between Sun and Moon is 108 times of Diameter of Sun, the distance between Moon and Earth is 108 times of Diameter of Moon and Diameter of Sun is 108 times of diameter of Earth.

108 has a reference in Vedas as a form of Shiv-Shakti. Shiv is considered a symbol of order and simplicity, traditionally associated with masculinity. Shakti, the feminine power represents chaos and complexity. Their togetherness represents a balance between the extremes they represent as individual concepts.

The Sun representing Shiv takes one year to complete the circle of 360 degrees which forms a divine circle of 12 rashis (constellations) in the heavens.

The 27 Nakshatras also form a circle in the heavens spanning 360 degrees. Each Nakshatra has 4 Padas so in all we have 27 X 4 = 108 Padas. Nakshatras are ruled by the Moon which represents Shakti (Cosmic Energy).

Sun and Moon represent Shiv-Shakti and the divine energy of the Universe. The Shakti (Cosmic energy) completes Shiv, Balances Shiv hence the number 108 is considered sacred and given such importance in the scriptures.

Reciting any auspicious mantra 108 times endows the mantra with the Cosmic Energy from the Nakshatras giving it a divine strength. By Chanting a mantra 108 times, the energy (Shakti) boosts the strength of the mantra which is thought to bring benefits to the devotee chanting the mantra.

Fasting

Fasting

Fasting is practiced in Hinduism as in many religions.

Scientifically, fasting detoxifies the body and spiritually it purifies the mind. The body feels lighter and your mind feels more relaxed as the restlessness reduces.  At the same time, the mind becomes more alert.  When that happens, it is more prepared for prayer, and meditation, which is the intention of fasting.  In principle fasting does not mean keeping the stomach empty, fasting must be managed in a way that does not alleviate the stomach acid.

Fasting enables you to control the body’s natural processes and concentrate.  It frees the mind of negative emotions like greed, lust, anger, and anxiety and helps control laziness, drowsiness brought on with excessive food intake and to focus and control your thoughts.

Fasting can range from light restriction to extreme abstention. Fasting helps our digestive system by allowing it time for cleansing. Fasting has been suggested to have health benefits like caloric restriction, reduction in cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and immune disorders to name a few.

However, foods you choose to eat before and at the breaking of fasting are very important to get all the benefits.  During the night time while breaking the fast one should eat food that repairs and not gives energy (No carbohydrates). Fasts have varying levels of restrictions and allowances like consumption of fruits or certain seasonal foods during fasts.

Fasting is for all ages, but a younger body needs carbohydrates at shorter intervals hence the tradition exempts children.  The science experts advise Diabetics and pregnant women need to be more careful and should avoid fasting over 15-16 hours.

Note: if the Tithi falls on two dates of the Gregorian calendar, then fasting is to be observed on the day when Tithi is active at the time Sunrise.

Types of Navratri

Types of Navratri

“Navratri” is one of the most auspicious festivals celebrated across India. But do you know there are in all 4 Navratris celebrated every year in India worshipping the Goddesses?

First is Chaitra Navratri, also known as Vasanta Navratri. It starts on Pratipada Tithi of Shukla Paksha (1 st day of brighter half) of the Chaitra month. It is also the beginning of the Hindu New Year. Vasanta Navratri marks the seasonal change from spring to summer. Everyone worships 9 avatars of Goddess Durga to get her blessings. Devotees observe nine days strict fasting period to allow our body to adjust to the changing climate and prevent indigestion. It is mostly celebrated in northern India and western India. The nine-day festival which is also known as Rama Navratri ends on Rama Navami, Lord Ram’s birthday.

There are 2 other Navratris, Ashad and Magha which are called Gupt Navratri (unknown). These two Navratris have great importance for Sadhaks (Devotees) who practice Tantra Sadhana. Sadhaks attempt to gain power by worshiping the 10 Mahavidyas (Wisdom Goddesses) associated with the Tantra exercise.

Ashad Navratri, also known as Gayatri or Shakambhari Navratri, is celebrated in the Shukla Paksha of Ashad month (during June-July). It is believed that this worship is for good monsoon rains. Magh Navratri is celebrated during Pratipada Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Magh month (January-February).

Fourth Navratri is Sharad Navratri. This is celebrated during the lunar month of Ashvin, it marks the beginning of winters (September-October). It is mostly celebrated in Eastern India. This Navratri is dedicated to nine forms of Maa Shakti and every day one goddess is worshiped namely, Shailputri, Brahmacharni, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalratri, Mahagauri and Siddhidatri who together slayed the demon Mahishasura. In Southern India Goddess Lakshmi and Saraswati are worshiped during this festival.

Astrology is a myth or fact

Astrology is a myth or fact

It is not a myth, it is a science. It is computed with intricate calculations with methodical rules, which is why it qualifies as a science. It is a science that can be proved; it finds its roots in the intermingling of mathematics and Astronomy, many rishis and famous scientists have researched this subject and laid its foundation

The people who criticize this discipline are the same people who secretly and frequently look for hope in their horoscopes and rely on a one-liner explanation of their signs in the daily newspaper. Like each individual is unique, so is each horoscope, then how will the single line be applicable to millions of people

who share the same sign?

Astrology is not a remedy it’s a guide

Expecting that the astrologer can perform some miracle when they look at the horoscope is an error many of us make. An astrologer is someone who studies the horoscope and makes predictions with which they may be able to guide you to your answers.

When an astrologer suggests you a remedy, it is to give you positive vibes, to give hope and possibly start productive thoughts. These do not directly cause any miracle but instill an optimistic perspective insomeone who despairs. Our psychological condition affects our decisions and actions. Our belief in god makes us feel blessed by performing some rituals.

Prediction is a skill of estimating as near to accuracy as possible, but keep in mind, it doesn’t matter if you use Vedic Shastra or any other system what has to happen, always will.

It is complex to explain but if you understand this language, the skies speak to you.

Dasha Paddhati

Dasha Paddhati

We hear people say they have a Mangal/Mars Dasha, or someone they know is undergoing a Shani/Saturn Dasha, and often find ourselves asking the meaning of the word. What is a Dasha? How does it impact our lives? Does everyone have their own Dasha? Does it bring bad luck? Such questions plague our mind and we are left with answers beyond our understanding.

Let us understand Dasha in a simple manner…

The state of a person’s life is called Dasha. Vedic Shastra comprises of 32 such Dashas, but only Vimshottari, Yogini, Ashtottari, and Chara are essentially used. Out of these, Vimshottari Mahadasha is the most widely known as well as used.

the word Vimshottari can be broken down into two segments Vimsh + Uttari. Vimsh translates to ‘twenty’ (20) in Sanskrit,Uttara means after, meaning “twenty after”. When the suffix uttari or beyond is used in a Sanskritic term, the number 100 is taken for granted, i.e. 20 more than 100. We can hence conclude that Vimshottari Mahadasha expands over a total of 120 years. In the Kaliyug, we approximate an average individual’s lifespan to extend up to 120 years maximum.

A Dasha is applicable from the moment one takes birth, and for the entirety of their lifespan.

In the Vimshottari, each Dasha in every phase of a human’s life is divided into 5 parts. The part that has the most influence over their life is termed the Mahadasha (the 1stlayer) and the one that has the least time of influence is called the  Praandasha (the 5thlayer).

Accordingly, the 5 parts of a Dasha are Mahadasha, Antardasha, Pratyantardasha, Sukshmadasha, and Praandasha. Their tenure is divided among the 9 planets in an uneven manner; each planet holds power over a person’s life for that definite period of time, and they keep alternating between the five layers.

The difference in the layers is that the planet in Mahadasha possesses power for a definite number of years. In the second layer the tenure is less by a few years, whereas the planet in the third layer holds power for only a few months. The fourth layer is concentrated over the period of few days, and the fifth over hours or mere minutes of a day.

Oftentimes, we think of Dasha as a negative occurrence only, but this isn’t at all true. The Dasha planet affects only the parts of life according to the Bhava in which it is posited in the Kundali. The most noticeable activity would take place in the Bhava where the Mahadasha (1st layer) planet is posited, followed by the Bhava where the Antardasha planet is posited, and so on.

If the planet whose Mahadasha is ongoing according to your Kundali is posited in an auspicious Bhava, or the planet itself is auspicious, then its results would also be blissful and prosperous. But if the planet is not connected to the field of one’s career or business, its effects would not be seen there. If it is connected to the Santati (kids) Bhava, then it will give fortune in that area.

Above, I used the word ‘most’ not entire. Wonder why? As we discussed there are five layers of Dasha, the remaining four may or may not be as auspicious. If, for instance, one of the layers contains a planet which is inauspicious for some parts of your Kundali, then they would give unpleasant results for those particular parts.

One can map the life event with the help of Mahadasha. It clearly indicates the timing of events in individual’s life.

In the end, we have to remember one thing, the Mahadasha of whichever planet, auspicious or inauspicious, is going to occur over a finite period. There are limits on the blissful times as well as the unkind times. The days would change.

To understand this better, I have an amusing example.

In the cinemaworld, Amitabh Bachchan was given the title of ‘The Angry Young Man’, which has stuck on for over fifty years as a top level celebrity. But in this same period, numerous actors have carved their own niche in the industry. Compared to Amitabh ji, their careers have spanned relatively short but they too have made a mark with their own name, like Jeetendra and Rishi Kapoor. After them came the age of romantic heroes, like Shah Rukh and Aamir. If I speak of VivekMushran, we can remember Saudagar, only one film. He was famous for that little while, to be forgotten later. These stars have had their glorious careers but Amitabh ji has had a longer run. Before he set his foot, Amitabh Bachchan was preceeded by Raj Kapoor and Rajesh Khanna, who were megastars in their own right. Years later, he would be succeeded by Akshay Kumar and the like, a cycle that would go on forever.

The Dasha cycle is akin to this, some bad days, some fortunate days pouring wealth, some days of glory others of drought. But the days always change.

Which direction should Ganesh’s trunk be facing in an idol?

Which direction should Ganesh trunk be facing in an idol

The tip of the trunk of the seated Ganesh tilted towards his left is suitable for worship at home or office.

Ganesh idols generally are made with the tip of trunk pointing His left or right side. Both the types are auspicious and have different significance of the position of His trunk.
While selecting an idol for worship or decorative piece of Lord Ganesh, one should confirm the direction in which the tip of his trunk leans.

The energy of the His body is divided into three parts- left, center, and the right. It is controlled by three basic Nadis. Ida Nadi controls the left side of the body, Sushumna Nadi controls the center, and Pingala the right side. Here Nadi means Praana and not nerve.

Ida Nadi is associated with the Moon, which is feminine and fluid-natured. Hence, the left side of Lord Ganesh is considered cool and calm. It brings peace of mind and emits positive energy, happiness and success. Idols which have left pointing trunk tip, by tradition allow simpler rituals for general public not only during the Ganesh festival but also when worshiped at home.

The Sun is associated with Pingala Nadi. He is masculine, full of energy, and fiery in nature. Therefore, it indicates aggression, heat and strictness. This form of Ganesh needs massive devotion, honesty, and concentration in worship. Idols which have right pointing trunk tip, by tradition requires strict adherence of rituals which have to be followed by every member of the family.

There is also a third type where His trunk is depicted straight with the tip pointing upward and it is considered very auspicious. An idol with an absolutely straight trunk comes under Sushumna Nadi, which is neutral. This type of idols are very rare, and generally worshiped for mental health.

Lord Ganesh is a symbol of knowledge and happiness. Select the idol that sits in a Padmasana, which symbolizes that he is not in a hurry to move and his blessings stay with us.
